The topic of conversation has turned to Arsenal inside the Football Transfer Tavern, with predictions being made about who Arsene Wenger is set to sign in January.
All the talk suggests the Gunners boss is set to sign another striker, with Nicklas Bendtner the only support act for Olivier Giroud at present.
The likes of Karim Benzema and Alexandre Pato have both been linked, while some reports suggest Wenger will test Liverpool’s resolve once again with another big money bid for Luis Suarez.
Whilst the signing of a new striker may take most of the headlines, Wenger is also aware he needs a fourth centre back.
Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny have been outstanding as the first choice partnership, so much so that club captain Thomas Vermaelen can hardly get a look in.
The Belgian has been linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium in January, as he hunts first team football ahead of next summer’s World Cup – a prospect that could leave Wenger’s search for a new defender even more important.
The Arsenal manager ideally wants a young player who would be happy to be fourth choice for the present, with the potential to develop into a first choice in the future.
Here, we have identified five ideal fourth choice centre back signings for the Gunners boss to pursue.
