It’s been another tough week for Manchester United fans inside the Football Transfer Tavern.
Wednesday night saw David Moyes face his former club for the first time since leaving to take over from Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer, and he was left embarrassed as Everton left Old Trafford with a 1-0 win.
It was a result that means United have now gone three Premier League games without a win, and leaves them sitting in ninth place, 12 points behind league leaders Arsenal.
There is no doubting Moyes is going to have to enter the transfer market once the window opens in January, with midfield reinforcements highest on the list of priorities.
But closely behind that is perhaps the signing of a new central defender.
Reports continue to suggest Nemanja Vidic is close to bringing down the curtain on a fantastic Manchester United career, with niggling injuries proving a problem once again this season.
The likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have often been deployed out of position, either at right back or in Jones’s case as a holding midfielder, which indicates perhaps Moyes isn’t ready to hand them the responsibility of succeeding Vidic just yet.
With that in mind, we have identified five possible transfer targets who would make the ideal replacement for the Manchester United captain should he depart soon.
