5 January signings Chelsea should avoid at all costs

Wesley SneijderMore than most clubs, Chelsea are big spenders in the January transfer window. As our landlord notes here in the Football Transfer Tavern, quite often, those big money purchases go ever so slightly wrong.

Fernando Torres may be back to something resembling his best now, but he has been the poster boy for a big mistake in the winter transfer window. Of course, it is not just a huge price tag that can mean a move is doomed to fail.

Consider if a squad is so full a certain type of player is simply not needed. Chelsea are the prime example of that when it comes to talented and tricky playmakers. They already have far more than they can accommodate, yet are being linked with more each day.

As our punters note, that is confusing at best and a recipe for disaster at worst. Chelsea are in dire need of a forward and a world class centre back, and their fans probably wouldn’t say no to a defensive midfielder who has experience either.

Spending big, big money on inflated prices however is not something we want to see. The Blues are coming together nicely and are looking rather ominous. Given Fernando Torres has just gotten his mojo back, to brilliant effect, the last thing Mourinho wants to do is destroy that confidence again – and spending huge money on a marquee forward would do just that.

With that in mind, we have taken a look at five players Chelsea have been linked to who they should avoid at all costs.
