It’s been another wretched week for Manchester United fans inside the Football Transfer Tavern, who remained glued to Sky Sports News in the hope a major new signing will be announced shortly.
David Moyes suffered his fifth home defeat of the season yesterday, as Swansea City dumped United out of the FA Cup at the third round stage with a 2-1 win at Old Trafford.
Moyes declared after the game there is now an ‘urgency’ around Old Trafford with regards to making January signings, although many will feel it has come four months too late.
United have been paying the price for a disastrous summer transfer window, in which only Maraoune Fellaini walked through the Old Trafford entrance doors, and for an excessive price.
The Belgian has made no sort of impact and with injuries to Rooney and van Persie, and a host of other players struggling to recapture their best form, Moyes is in trouble.
The bad news for him and Manchester United fans is that everyone knows January is hardly the best time to sign players.
“There is an urgency that we want to sign players but are the ones we want available in January?,” Moyes said yesterday.
“I have said before that I will try to bring players in this month,” he continued. “But it is doubtful because of the way the window works.
“There is no point me hyping it up, because the ones we want are probably not going to be available. It is that, rather than us not wanting to do it.”
That leaves Moyes in the dangerous position of being forced into panic purchases this month.
Here we have identified five players linked with a move to Old Trafford this month that we think Moyes should avoid at all costs.
