It has been a nightmare 2014/15 season so far for Liverpool but one crumb of consolation is that at least they hold their Champions League destiny in their own hands.
The Reds halted a run of four consecutive defeats in all competitions with a battling 2-2 draw in Ludogorets in midweek meaning a home victory over FC Basel at Anfield in their final group match will see them progress to the last 16.
But that is far from certain given the Reds’ horrific form this season.
Brendan Rodgers finds himself under intense pressure with his team looking a pale imitation of the one that came so close to the Premier League title last season.
The Northern Irishman’s summer signings have been called into question the most with Dejan Lovren, Lazar Markovic, Alberto Moreno, Javi Manquillo, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert struggling to make any sort of consistent impact whilst the less said about Mario Balotelli the better.
Balotelli is yet to open his Premier League account but the player’s agent this week quashed rumours of a January return to Italy, insisting the Italian international striker will come good at Anfield.
Whilst that remains to be seen, we have still managed to find five Liverpool signings who Balotelli surely won’t prove worse than in the long run.
