Liverpool’s quest for a marquee signing looks set to continue into January.
Brendan Rodgers spent the summer trying to bring in one big name star that he felt could take his team to the next level – and sadly for him and all Liverpool fans he failed on three occasions.
First of all it was a £23.5 million bid for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who opted for a switch to Borussia Dortmund who could provide Champions League football.
Then Rodgers saw Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa opt to stay in Spain, despite a hefty £21 million bid.
And finally, Brazilian winger Willian snubbed the Reds in favour of a move to Chelsea, via a medical at Tottenham.
Rodgers made it clear often enough in the summer that the funds were available for the right type of player, and January is set to see him try his luck for new attacking talent once more.
The name most heavily linked at present is Paris Saint-Germain’s Argentine attacker Javier Pastore, who is reportedly unhappy with life in the French capital.
Rodgers remains confident of signing the 24-year-old in January, but reportedly faces competition from Arsenal, Tottenham and AC Milan.
The Liverpool boss has already learned the hard way about competing for players in the transfer market, and no doubt will have a plan B in place.
Here, we have identified five alternatives to their top target Pastore.
