Liverpool fans inside the Football Transfer Tavern are only just recovering from Saturday’s pulsating Merseyside derby against Everton.
The 3-3 draw at Goodison Park was without a doubt the game of the season so far, but there are plenty of Reds fans who feel it was two points dropped rather than a point gained, having led for much of the game.
And the turning point in the game without a doubt came with the score at 2-1 to Liverpool, when Joe Allen contrived to miss a sitter from eight yards out, with just the keeper to beat.
This was the latest chapter in what has been a difficult time for Allen since his £15 million move from Swansea City last summer.
After a positive start to his Liverpool career, Allen has faded badly, and missed the final eight games of last season through injury.
In fact, Saturday was the midfielder’s first Premier League start of the season, as he lined up in a more advanced position of a Liverpool midfield that included Steven Gerrard, Lucas, Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho.
There are some Liverpool fans who think Allen’s time at Anfield is already up, and stories linking the Reds with new midfield talent refuse to go away.
One name that has been continually linked is Lazio star Ogenyi Onazi. The 20-year-old is a box-to-box midfielder with bags of potential.
However, Merseyside rivals Everton are also showing strong interest in the Nigerian international and are set to make a January offer.
With that in mind, we have identified five possible alternatives to Onazi for the Reds to consider.
