An interesting rumour has reached the Football Transfer Tavern, courtesy of Martin Lipton of the Daily Mirror.
Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea fans have all had their say on the future of Southampton skipper Adam Lallana, with all three clubs having been linked with a summer move for the England international.
Manchester United have perhaps been the most strongly linked, but Lipton reckons the 25-year-old is set to snub a move to the Red Devils in favour of a switch to Brendan Rodgers’ Reds.
The fact Liverpool have guaranteed Champions League qualification already is set to play a major part in Lallana’s decision, with United having missed out on qualification for Europe’s elite competition for the first time since 1995.
The managerial uncertainty surrounding the Red Devils will also make signing their top targets more difficult than first anticipated.
Ryan Giggs currently holds the position on an interim basis following the sacking of David Moyes last week, but the long-term future of the club remains uncertain.
Of course, there is no guarantee Lallana to Liverpool is a done deal, but if the reports turn out to be correct, United are going to have to turn their attentions elsewhere this summer.
Here, we have come up with five possible alternatives for the club to consider.
