For some time now, Manchester United fans have freely admitted that they need something more in the middle of the park, and have gone from having one of the best midfields in Europe in their heyday to not even having one of the top ones in England!
Despite being linked to a host of players during the recent transfer window – such as Barcelona turned Bayern Munich player Thiago Alcantara and also Cesc Fabregas, they only brought in one player – and that was Marouane Fellaini on deadline day. This of course left them with few options to utilise in the middle of the park and fans are lamenting that fact today.
One of our punters notes that there is of course the option of playing five in the middle and using Wayne Rooney as part of that formation, and whilst there is no doubting the forward is more than capable of playing that role, the fact remains, that that is not a position he enjoys playing in.
With that in mind, here are our top five midfield combinations for United, and it makes for grim reading. We are assuming for the majority of the time that David Moyes will use a 4-4-2 formation or some variation of it – simply because of the talent up top at the club, and the lack of it in the midfield.
