A new era is upon everyone at Manchester United, following the official announcement that Louis van Gaal is set to take over at Old Trafford following the summer’s World Cup campaign with the Netherlands.
The 62-year-old is regarded as one of the finest managers in the game, having enjoyed success with European giants the likes of Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
And van Gaal is confident he can bring a similar sort of success to Old Trafford.
“This club has big ambitions. I too have big ambitions,” he said. “Together I’m sure we will make history.”
But despite the bold statement, van Gaal will be under no illusions there is plenty of work to be done at the 20 time English champions.
United only managed a seventh placed finish last season under David Moyes, and recent reports suggest the Dutchman only rates four of his current Manchester United squad.
Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Juan Mata and David De Gea are reportedly the quartet that Van Gaal is looking to build his team around, meaning he is certain to spend big money this summer.
With that in mind, we have identified five players who could well turn out to be the first signing of the Louis Van Gaal era at Manchester United.
