Chelsea have gone about their business in unspectacular fashion during the first half of the season, but as is the Jose Mourinho way, they still find themselves in with a chance of winning the two major prizes on offer heading into the second half of the campaign.
Whilst everyone has been busy talking about the improvement of Arsenal, Liverpool and Luis Suarez and Manchester City’s invincible home record, Mourinho has seen his side sneak up to third in the table, just two points behind leaders Arsenal.
With this being the closest title race in years, there is every chance some January additions could propel Chelsea to the status of favourites.
Goals have been the main problem.
Mourinho has made no secret of his unhappiness with his striking options, with Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba managing just five league goals between them so far this season – whilst not a single one has come away from Stamford Bridge.
Mourinho has also had to contend with a dramatic loss in form for David Luiz, with the Brazilian defender looking ever likely to be sold to Barcelona in January.
The Special One has also been chasing a holding midfielder since his arrival at Stamford Bridge, whilst question marks remain over the future of Ramires.
Meanwhile, a long-term replacement for Ashley Cole remains a priority for the Blues boss.
Chelsea as ever are likely to be busy in January, so here we have identified the five players we feel they are most likely to swoop for.
