It’s the start of a new week in the Football Transfer Tavern and as well as analysing all of the weekend’s Premier League action, we are also checking in on all of the latest transfer gossip.
One story that continues to dominate the back pages is the future of Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata.
The Spaniard has – unfortunately for Chelsea fans – proven to be one of the stories of the season, following Jose Mourinho’s somewhat strange decision to drop him from the first team more often than not.
Despite being a firm fans’ favourite, and the best Chelsea player of the past two seasons, Mata’s World Cup dream is hanging by a thread after being unable to dislodge the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar, Willian and Andre Schurrle from the first team.
It all came to a head on the New Year’s Day victory over Southampton, when Mata reacted angrily to being substituted early in the half.
His response prompted Mourinho to say after the game that the ‘door was open’ for Mata should he wish to make a January move and the speculation has exploded ever since.
Reports today suggest a move is inching ever closer, so here we have identified the five most realistic transfer destinations for Chelsea’s Spanish playmaker.
