Chelsea fans were mourning the end of an era in the Football Transfer Tavern last night, with Frank Lampard making the announcement that he will be leaving Stamford Bridge after 13-years at the club.
It has not taken long for the Blues to look towards a replacement, with The Independent amongst those reporting that Jose Mourinho has set his sights on Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas.
Fabregas – who joined Barcelona in a £35 million deal from Arsenal three years ago – is set to be one of the players let go this summer, following the Catalans’ disappointing season which ended without silverware.
Atletico Madrid playmaker Koke is believed to be high on new manager Luis Enrique’s wanted list, leaving clubs able to take advantage of the Spain midfielders’ £30 million release clause.
Arsenal are thought to have first refusal on their former captain, but as of yet have not shown any interest in bringing the 27-year-old back to the Emirates Stadium.
Manchester United and Manchester City have also been linked with the Spanish international, however neither have followed up on their interest, with new United boss Louis van Gaal identifying different transfer targets to his predecessor David Moyes.
That has left the door open for Mourinho to make his move, perhaps even before the start of the World Cup in 10 days’ time.
With that in mind, we have identified five more players who could follow Fabregas to Stamford Bridge this summer.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
