Aston Villa have completed their first piece of business of the transfer window, signing former Arsenal and Fulham defender Philippe Senderos on a two-year-deal from Valencia that will take effect from July 1st.
The experienced defender completed the deal before jetting off to Brazil, where he will be representing Switzerland at the summer’s World Cup.
“I’m really delighted to be joining Aston Villa, a great club with such a big history, and for me this is a great step in my career,” he said.
He added: “This is a team and a club which wants to do better. I know this and hopefully we can all develop together and create something special.
“My goal is to help the team keep as many clean sheets as we can and to help drive Villa where we deserve to be and want to be.”
Villa manager Paul Lambert said: “This will be Philippe’s third World Cup finals and there aren’t too many players who compete at that level over that stretch of time. He’ll be a great addition to the group.”
Senderos may soon be joined at Villa Park by former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, with the Villans keen to get the current Republic of Ireland number two working alongside Paul Lambert in the same role.
Lambert finds himself under pressure to turn things around after another difficult campaign at Villa Park, which saw his side end the season in 14th place.
In order to do that, reinforcements this summer will be crucial.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
