The first surprise transfer of the summer looks set to be announced shortly, with widespread reports claiming Liverpool have agreed a £4 million fee for Southampton striker Rickie Lambert.
The Saints forward is a boyhood Liverpool fan, and was on the club’s books until the age of 15.
He has since gone on to play at every level of English football, for the likes of Blackpool, Macclesfield, Stockport County, Rochdale, Bristol Rovers, and finally Southampton.
He is set to leave St. Mary’s with a record of 117 goals in 235 games, whilst the 16 goals he fired last season earned him a call up to England’s World Cup squad.
The transfer to Anfield is set to complete a remarkable story for Lambert, who famously once worked in a beetroot factory before ending up playing both in the Premier League and for his country.
Whilst the signing will be viewed as surprising by some, Lambert’s record in the Premier League suggests he will prove a shrewd signing for Liverpool.
The Reds will have Champions League football to contend with next season, and with Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez the undisputed first choice pairing, the 32-year-old will make a good back-up option and a strong starter for cup competitions.
With a £4 million deal with add ons all but agreed, we have identified five potential signings that could follow Lambert to Anfield, in what is set to be a busy summer for the Reds.
