Punters in the Football Transfer Tavern have taken a break from the excitement of the World Cup to discuss a big transfer rumour on the domestic front.
According to The Telegraph, Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has agreed a deal in principle to join Manchester United, and rub further salt in the wounds of Gunners fans who are still mourning the fact Cesc Fabregas will be wearing a Chelsea strip next season.
United are still to agree a fee with the Gunners – who have already lost Bacary Sagna to Manchester City this summer – but the 28-year-old is looking to swap the Emirates Stadium for Old Trafford after the summer’s World Cup.
The Belgium international struggled to break up the first choice partnership of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker last season and looks set to move to United at a time the club have just lost legendary centre backs Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
Louis van Gaal is tasked with reviving the fortunes of the 20-time Premier League champions, and a move for the Arsenal captain will not be seen as a bad start.
However, there remains plenty of work to be done at Old Trafford following last seasons disastrous seventh placed finish, and surely plenty more signings to come.
