The conversation has once again turned to Chelsea’s striker problems inside the Football Transfer Tavern.
It is no secret the Blues forwards have struggled in front of goal this season, with a combined total of four Premier League goals between Fernando Torres, Demba Ba, and Samuel Eto’o.
Jose Mourinho’s decision to loan out Romelu Lukaku – who has managed eight league goals for Everton in 11 appearances this season – has come under fire, and with the Chelsea boss unable to recall the Belgian in January, stories suggest he may have to return to the transfer market.
Last week Mourinho was forthcoming in discussing his striking problems after the shock 3-2 defeat to Stoke City, suggesting his strikers were not in the same league as the likes of Sergio Aguero and Luis Suarez.
‘The other guys (Aguero and Suarez) play their strengths and have super individual qualities: dribble, shots, sharp movement. They resolve problems,” he said.
‘We don’t have this kind of striker and need them to do different type of work.
‘Do I expect more? Yes. Do we need more? Yes. But can’t expect Demba or Fernando to get ball like Sergio Aguero or Luis Suarez, dribble past three and score.’
There is no doubt Mourinho is after a top class striker to help his teams title challenge, and one name that refuses to go away is Radamel Falcao.
The Colombian only joined Monaco in the summer, but is reportedly unsettled and looking to move on once more.
However Chelsea have been left frustrated in their pursuit of the former Porto man in the past, and may well be forced to look to alternatives once more.
Here we have identified five realistic alternatives to the Monaco forward for Mourinho to ponder.
