5 realistic Manchester United ‘transfer replacements’ for Rio Ferdinand

Fabian ScharManchester United fans are getting edgier by the minute here in the Football Transfer Tavern.

It’s been 11 days since the January transfer window opened and the start to 2014 for the Champions could hardly have been worse.

David Moyes has overseen three consecutive defeats for the first time since 2001, with United losing to Tottenham in the Premier League on New Year’s Day, before being dumped out of the FA Cup at home to Swansea City, and then going on to lose 2-1 to Sunderland in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final.

Oh, and David Moyes is now the subject of an FA investigation following his comments on referees.

But possibly most concerning of all, is that there is still no word on any imminent arrivals at Old Trafford.

Moyes said recently there is an ‘urgency’ to bring in new faces, but as of yet, nothing has come to the fore.

United have been paying the price for a disastrous summer transfer window, which saw the club miss out on a host of top targets.

And if reports are to be believed, the same situation may be about to occur this time around.

One area in particular Moyes needs to strengthen and strengthen fast, are his centre back positions.

Rio Ferdinand has struggled for fitness all season and looks to be on his way out of Old Trafford at the end of the season, whilst the future of club captain Nemanja Vidic remains up in the air.

Ferdinand’s imminent departure looks almost a certainty however, so with that in mind, we have identified five possible transfer replacements for the former England captain.
