Arsenal players took their lap of honour around the Emirates Stadium following Sunday’s 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion, wondering perhaps what might have been.
Arsene Wenger’s side looked the team to beat during the first half of the season, as goals from Aaron Ramsey, and the assists of club record signing Mesut Ozil inspired the Gunners to the top of the Premier League table.
But painfully, and somewhat predictably, their title challenge faltered between February and March, and another fourth placed Premier League finish is all they have to celebrate at present.
The Gunners do have an FA Cup Final to look forward to in two weeks, and an opportunity to end their nine-year trophy drought.
But Gunners fans will feel that with the right signings (in January), and a bit more luck, they could have seen their side claim the Premier League title this season.
Arsene Wenger says injuries to key players, and heavy defeats at the homes of title rivals are what proved costly in the end.
But some will suggest they saw enough over the first half of the season to claim Arsenal have what it takes to mount a serious title challenge if a few issues are ironed out.
