The Manager – Poor tactical decisions, puzzling line ups and substitutions and masses of money spent that haven’t AS YET produced much, suggest that the manager with a passion for fashion has a lot to learn about managing at a big-spending club in the Premiership. And quickly. Perhaps Mourinho’s work at Chelsea can now be seen differently, yes he spent a lot, but he spent it well.
UEFA – It seems the men in charge have had enough of Arab/Russian/just about anyone taking over a football club as a billionaire’s plaything. The new Financial Fair Play Concept with its initiatives on breaking even, risk, salary levels and debt appears to have serious repercussions for clubs who choose to run at an enormous loss. Signings on the level of Yaya Toure would appear to be under threat.
Player Power – And not the sort that Didier Drogba uses to outmuscle defenders each week. The bad sort. Rumours of in-fighting, squabbles and training ground bust ups involving Mancini, Tevez, Santa Cruz and the rest aren’t good for business. Plus the model pros Emmanuel Adebayor and Mario Balotelli are in the squad, that can’t help.
They Are Man City – As a club, City seem to have an innate ability to self-combust. Whether it’s getting relegated, playoff penalty shoot outs, takeovers by foreign businessmen and then more takeovers, the blue half of Manchester loves a storyline that wouldn’t look out of place in Hollywood. Just ask any one of their umpteen managers of the last decade. The latest narrative of an ever-changing transfer policy which seems to either revolve around who is wanted by someone else, someone who plays up front and has scored last week or anyone who plays in defensive midfield, typifies the rollercoaster ride that City fans have to endure. And probably secretly enjoy.
The Harlem Globetrotters – As entertaining team as you’ll see in world sport in their own given field (or court in this instance), a team of stars thrown together to entertain and draw the crowds with their unique and vibrant form of attacking would probably be given a run for their money in a serious league format. Best revise that transfer policy Roberto.
Oh hang on, Torres is available for £50 million? Can I play Gareth Barry and ten strikers?
