Liverpool now have 12 Premier League games to ensure they qualify for the Champions League – or in Brendan Rodgers words: ‘finish as high as we possibly can’.
The Reds suffered a controversial FA Cup defeat to Arsenal at the weekend, and whilst the tears of striker Daniel Sturridge at the final whistle confirmed the result was a major disappointment, the result gives Liverpool just one competition to put all their focus on.
Jose Mourinho has continued to tell anyone who will listen that Brendan Rodgers’ side should be considered title favourites, as they do not have the added distraction of the Champions League.
Whilst the Liverpool boss is keen to remind anyone it is unprecedented from a team to go from seventh to the Championship in the space of 12 months, and Champions League qualification remains the priority.
But with Chelsea, Tottenham, and Manchester City still to come to Anfield, there is a quiet confidence around Merseyside that suggests fourth should be the bare minimum the Reds are aiming for over the final 12 games.
Should the Reds achieve their targets this season, Rodgers will be rewarded with money to spend in the summer, and various reports have recently linked with Reds with a few talented players from Serie A.
