Arsenal supporters have not had to endure too many tough days in the Football Transfer Tavern this season, but Saturday was certainly one of them.
Arsene Wenger’s side travelled to Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium in the game being billed as the first blockbuster of the Christmas period.
The game certainly didn’t disappoint for City fans, or indeed the neutral, as Manuel Pellegrini’s side ran out 6-3 winners over the league leaders.
But for Arsenal, it was certainly a day to forget, especially for a defence that has been in excellent form this season.
Manchester City have shown their scoring pedigree against the big sides already this season, scoring four against Manchester United, and six against Tottenham at the Etihad previously.
Not only did the result cut Arsenal’s lead at the top to just two points by the end of the weekend but it also left them with a timely reminder they need a new centre back in January.
Wenger was already short in that department after a summer spent dragging his heels in the transfer market, until a dramatic deadline day.
But centre back and man in form Laurent Koscielny was forced off five minutes before the interval on Saturday, and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a deep cut to the knee.
With that in mind, we have identified five signings to boost the Gunners defensive ranks in January.
