Amidst all the hype surrounding Arsenal and their £40million bid for Luis Suarez (don’t forget the extra £1), it is easy to forget the club are actually facing something of a defensive crisis at present.
The injury picked up by Laurent Koscielny during a recent pre season training session caused something of a scare. Whilst the Frenchman is expected to be fit for the start of the season, the injury revealed the lack of depth Arsenal currently have in that department.
Johan Djourou has been sent out on loan, Sebastian Squillaci has been released, and club captain Thomas Vermaelen is out for a couple more months with a back injury.
That leaves Per Mertesacker as the club’s only fit senior defender at present, leaving Arsenal horribly short of centre back options going into the new season, and completely void of any kind of pace.
This means Wenger may have to turn his attentions away from Suarez for a couple of hours at least, and bring in some centre back cover for the new season.
Arsenal fans have grown somewhat frustrated with all the hype and no end product regarding new signings this summer, but the current injury situation surely means there will be some defensive incomings shortly.
