It may have been a glorified pre-season friendly but Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield yesterday has sent out a statement of intent to the rest of the Premier League.
The manner in which Arsene Wenger’s side swept aside the Premier League champions has certainly got Gunners supporters excited for the big Premier League kick off next weekend – with many predicting that this could well be their year.
The additions of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and David Ospina have seen the squad strengthened, whilst the likes of Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are set to play a bigger role than last season after lengthy periods out injured.
Perhaps the main reason for the positivity heading into the new season is the fact the Gunners were able to end their nine-year trophy drought at Wembley three months ago – and the pressure appears to have been lifted.
Manchester City may have been far from full strength yesterday, but the performance of Arsenal deserves to be taken seriously.
