Tottenham fans have been raising a glass to Jermain Defoe in the Football Transfer Tavern, following the news the England forward is set to complete a move to MLS side Toronto FC next week.
The 31-year-old has been a fantastic servant for the club over the course of two spells and is set to leave as the club’s fifth highest goal scorer of all-time, with 142 goals, and the club’s all-time top European goal scorer with a total of 23 goals.
Defoe, who has played more than 250 games for Spurs, said: “Everybody knows how much this club means to me, I will play my heart out until my last kick.”
“I have had a fantastic time here and the fans have always been amazing to me.”
Defoe has decided to move on after losing his first team place to £26 million summer signing Roberto Soldado – a man who has still managed just one Premier League goal from open play all season.
Defoe perhaps has a right to feel hard done by, considering he has managed nine goals in cup competitions this season.
But with Emanuel Adebayor recently returning to the first team fold, it seemed the right time for the England man to take on a new challenge.
New Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood now has the unenviable task of replacing a club hero – or to put it in another way, a new third choice striker.
Here we have identified five possible replacements for Defoe for Tottenham to consider.
