5 Tottenham ‘transfer replacements’, should Jan Vertonghen jump ship

Steven Caulker Tottenham fans inside the Football Transfer Tavern are feeling the pressure as we enter the final 10 games of the season.

The club currently sit four points behind fourth placed Manchester City, although Manuel Pellegrini’s side have two games in hand.

Realistically, Tim Sherwood’s side perhaps have the best chance of catching Liverpool or Arsenal in the race for the final Champions League spot, with the gap between those two sides currently standing at six points.

Last week’s comeback victory over Dnipro also meant Tottenham have the Europa League to contend with between now and the end of the season – a competition that has caused them problems in Premier League matches after long trips across Europe.

Tim Sherwood remains calm and composed, confident his side will do all they can to claim that final fourth spot, and bring Champions League football back to White Hart Lane.

Pressure also stems from the fact key players are quietly suggesting that a summer move away could be on the cards, should the club fail to make it back into Europe’s elite competition.

One of the most concerning situations revolves around centre back Jan Vertonghen, who has gone on to establish himself as one of the best defenders in the division since his move from Ajax in the summer of 2012.

Losing him would be a major blow for Spurs, but could also be a real possibility unless Sherwood’s men can close that six point gap.

Here we have identified five possible transfer replacements, should Vertonghen jump ship in the summer.
