It often helps to take comments Mourinho makes with a pinch of salt. Often the Portuguese coach is playing some of his famous mind games, and trying to lull rivals into a false sense of security.
You get the feeling there was an air of that regarding his recent comments that claimed it was ‘Rooney or bust’ for Chelsea this summer.
If Mourinho has his sights set on a player, he will more often than not get his man – so perhaps the comments stem from his supreme confidence the signing will be completed.
But the Chelsea boss is also not daft enough to not have a back up plan in place. And not just with regards to Rooney – it is more likely than not there will be more incomings and outgoings at Stamford Bridge before the transfer window shuts.
Chelsea continue to be linked with a host of names, day in day out. With the market being what it is at present, Mourinho may have to take a few gambles if not all of his first choices come to fruition – as has been the case with Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani already this summer.
