A forward. That was the most common and least surprising comment when we asked the punters in the Football Transfer Tavern just what position Chelsea needed to strengthen this winter.
Not just any forward, as one of our punters points out. Blues fans want someone who can actually score goals this time. The club are no strangers to making big money bids for players who simply do not live up to their star billing and it is their forwards who fill up this list.
From Adrian Mutu to Andriy Shevchenko, Chelsea have spent big money on attacking flops. Fernando Torres seemed to be the biggest of them all, but he is undergoing something of a revival under Jose Mourinho right now and there may well be hope for him yet.
That being said, as our landlord points out, the club could well do with another couple of players – anyone who has seen the mishaps of David Luiz can attest to that!
Chelsea will want to go all the way in both the Premier League and in Europe, and that has to play a part in who they will buy in the winter.
Players who are Champions League tied of course have their drawbacks, but in terms of their top priority – the league – Mourinho will be more than happy to bring a top class forward in.
With that in mind, here are the five players Chelsea should prioritise signing this January.
