Southampton supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side throw away a two-goal lead to end up only drawing 2-2 with Watford in the Premier League last weekend, thus extending their winless league run to ten matches.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men may well have gone into their clash in Hertfordshire off the back of a 1-0 success over Fulham in the FA Cup, but they hadn’t won any of their preceding nine league matches, dating back to November. Yet they looked on course for a fifth victory of the season as a James Ward-Prowse brace gave them a 2-0 lead, only for second half goals from Andre Gray and Abdoulaye Doucoure, the latter a hugely controversial one, to snatch a point for Marco Silva’s Hornets.
Consequently, there have been a few deflated Saints fans in the Tavern this week, although they are likely to be interested and possibly encouraged by a recent report from Sky Sports, which suggests that their side are eyeing up a move for Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes this month.
The 26-year-old made the move to the Russian Premier League champions back in 2014 and has since proven his worth with 58 goals and 31 assists in just 115 games for the club, including 12 goals in just 26 league games last season to help them to the domestic title.
And the Netherlands international is clearly doing something right as recent reports suggest that goal-shy Southampton, scorers of just 23 goals in 23 Premier League games this term, are lining up a possible move for the winger this month, with manager Pellegrino eyeing attacking talent in a bid to move the club clear of danger.
But with Spartak reportedly hoping to acquire £30 million for Promes’ services, it very much remains to be seen whether the Saints are indeed able to lure him to St Mary’s.
Landlord’s verdict: With just 23 goals in 23 Premier League games this season, there’s no prizes for guessing what the key issue is at Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton.
And there’s also little surprise that the Saints chief is in the market for attacking talent, with reports recently suggesting that the South Coast outfit are eyeing up a move for Spartak Moscow’s prolific winger Quincy Promes, scorer of 58 goals in just 115 games for the club.
And with at least ten goals in each of his four campaigns at the Russian champions, he could be exactly what Southampton need in 2018, but with Spartak reportedly holding out for £30 million, it looks set to be a tough ask for Pellegrino and the Saints board to bring him to St Mary’s this month.
