After a fairly miserable season so far, the Southampton fans here in the Transfer Tavern were absolutely delighted with their win over Bournemouth. Indeed, while there is still work to do, the punters propping up our bar are feeling ever so slightly better about the relegation battle.
Not only would the Saints suffer financially if they are relegated to the Championship, but they would also be unable to attract the high calibre players that clubs in the top division can. There is still time for Mark Hughes to save his side from the drop but the future is looking bleak at St. Marys.
Regardless of whether they survive, goals need to be added to the side.
Out of contract in the summer, Shakhtar Donetsk striker Facundo Ferreyra could be just the man to solve Southampton’s problems.
He is valued at £6.3m by Transfermarkt but is yet to pen a new contract in Ukraine so would be available for nothing when the window reopens.
The 27-year-old has been in fine form this season, scoring a remarkable 17 goals in 22 appearances in the Ukrainian Premier League. Even in Europe, Ferreyra has found the back of the net with three Champions League goals to his name.
It would not be his first time in England should he complete a move after a short loan spell with Newcastle back in 2015. He struggled to adapt to the physicality of the division and returned to Ukraine without playing a minute of football for the Magpies.
Back to his best, it could be second time lucky for the Argentine.
Southampton fans, would you be happy to see Facundo Ferreyra join the club? Let us know!
