Newcastle United supporters have been making all the noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side edge Manchester United 1-0 on Sunday to secure a vital victory in their battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Red Devils having slipped into the division’s bottom three, what with Huddersfield Town getting the better of Bournemouth prior to kick-off. Yet the Magpies responded brilliantly and deservedly beat Jose Mourinho’s United, with Matt Ritchie’s second half effort proving to be enough to clinch all three points for the North East giants, thus moving them up to 13th place in the Premier League with just 11 matches remaining.
Subsequently, there have been many buoyant Magpies fans in the Tavern in the last few days, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from Il Resto del Carino (via The Newcastle Chronicle), which suggests that Bologna striker Mattia Destro is on their side’s radar ahead of the summer.
The 26-year-old has been playing his trade at the Serie A outfit since 2015 and in that time has scored 24 goals and laid on seven assists in 80 games for the club, five goals of which have come this term in helping them to 13th place in the Italian top-flight.
And it appears that Destro has attracted interest from the Premier League in recent times, with Newcastle and indeed Watford reportedly keen on landing the eight-time Italy international in the summer.
And with the Magpies somewhat short in the forward ranks, it’s a move which could very well take place in the summer should they avoid relegation to the Championship.
Landlord’s verdict: Much has been made of Newcastle’s attacking struggles so far this season, prompting Rafa Benitez to land Islam Slimani on loan during the January window.
Yet it appears that the Magpies chief also has one eye on the summer, as reports suggest that he is interested in Bologna striker Mattia Destro, scorer of five goals in Serie A this season and 24 overall in 80 games for the Italian outfit.
Obviously, much of Newcastle’s transfer business will depend on whether they stay in the Premier League, but if they are indeed able to do that, the £6.3 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) could well make the move to St James’ Park in the summer.
