Now AVB may have left Chelsea but the need for change amongst Chelsea’s ageing playing squad still remains. This summer is shaping up to be a crucial one if Chelsea are to remain serious contenders for the league title, and it appears Abramovich is ready to once again wield his financial clout.
The Daily Mirror is reporting that Porto striker Hulk and Newcastle’s Tim Krul and Cheick Tiote could all be on their way to Stamford Bridge in deals totalling £64 million.
A new striker is likely to be top of the next Roman Revolution’s shopping list as rumours of Didier Drogba’s future lying away from London refuse to go away and Fernando Torres has been somewhat goal shy to say the least ever since his arrival.
Hulk could be a strong candidate to fill the goalscoring void for the blues after proving pivotal to Porto’s treble win last season, producing an impressive goal scoring record of 36 goals in 53 games.
The Daily Mirror suggest that a bid of around £34 million would be enough to force Porto to let the player, who has made no secret of his desire for a move, leave. Although one obstacle could be the third party ownership of the player, as Porto only own 85% of Hulk’s sporting rights.
£30 million is the price The Daily Mirror proposes for Chelsea to lure two of Newcastle’s star men this season south. Tiote would be a wonderful addition to the Chelsea midfield adding some of the bite the side currently lacks, and he posses the necessary distribution to start the kind of counter attacks that could see Mata and Sturridge feature more prominently in the goal scoring and assists stakes next season.
The goalkeeping position may not seem the most necessary target of change at Stamford Bridge but in many people’s eyes the once reliable Cech is beginning to look slightly shaky in recent months, lacking the confidence to command his penalty with the ease he once did.
In contrast to Cech Tim Krul has been in great form this season making the number one spot his own at St. James Park and maturing into a fine Premiership goalkeeper in the process. Krul is also six years Cech’s junior and would help reduce the squad’s average age without damaging its quality.
