Following a difficult run of fixtures in which Liverpool were knocked out of the Carabao Cup and lost ground in their bid to qualify for the Champions League, the Reds came away from their clash with Manchester City with a valuable point to show for their efforts.
Jurgen Klopp adopted a level of pragmatism which typically eludes him in fixtures against the Premier League champions, and recent results certainly served to dictate his approach.
But a decent result was slightly tarnished by an injury collected by James Milner in the first-half as he was forced off the field of play with a hamstring problem.
Naby Keita came on to replace him and he put in a fairly modest display in central midfield which lacked the flair of his previous performances this season, although that was understandable given the nature of the fixture.
Following Milner’s setback, we published a poll asking Liverpool supporters whether they would like to see Jurgen Klopp start Keita or Fabinho in his place, and 67% of participants called for the Guinea international to fill the void.
The £120k per week (as per Spotrac) playmaker arrived at Anfield with a glowing reputation following his impressive stint with RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, and Milner’s absence may now hand him a perfect opportunity to cement his place in the first-team.
And based on the fact that Fabinho is yet to start a single Premier League fixture for the club, it’s more than likely that the majority of Liverpool supporters will get their wish against Huddersfield next weekend.
