News is breaking across the globe that Newcastle left-back Jose Enrique is a top target for Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool, as they look to strengthen their defence for the next campaign. (Something’s going on in Libya, but then when isn’t there?)
Enrique is on the verge of getting out of Toon, and recent comments made to the press in Spain suggested that he is expecting offers to come for him in Summer. Liverpool will have to battle it out with Manchester United, AC Milan and…Aston Villa (?) for the player’s signature. Enrique was said to be ‘flattered’ by the interest shown in him and told reporters,
‘I want to win things. I’m Ok at Newcastle but I aspire to more. I love the fans here and suffered with them when we were relegated. But we have to be realistic. Newcastle aren’t performing well.’
Which is a bit of a back-handed compliment. It feels like your girlfriend breaking up with you…’Yeah, you know, we’re good together…but…I just feel like, we’re going nowhere.’ Whilst you cling onto her leg, crying your eyes out and screaming ‘Why?’ so loud that people in the restaurant are starting to stare…..
Newcastle want £12 million, at the very least for Enrique, but Liverpool are only expecting to pay half that amount because Enrique has refused contract talks on Tyneside and the Reds feel Newcastle will settle instead of letting the player go for nothing. Pardew is naturally desperate to keep hold of Enrique, and has previously said that he believes the Spaniard is good enough to play at the highest level with his national side. However, it looks as though Enrique’s mind has been made up and that might force ‘Mighty’ Mike Ashley to make another key-player sale.
Jose Enrique has done his bit, fluttering his eyelashes and coyly cooing ‘Yoo-Hoo! Come and get me!’ to anyone who’ll listen, and Liverpool do need a quality left-back. Liverpool’s Director of Football Strategy, Damien Commolli, has personally scouted the player himself, and Enrique may believe that playing at Anfield will increase his chances of an international call-up.
Liverpool are also interested in Celtic’s Emilio Izaguirre, but would be in competition with Sir Alex Ferguson and the Manchester United chequebook for his signature. They’ve also been linked with Benfica’s Fabio Coentrao but he’s had a £20 million price tag slapped on his head by the Portugese side.
