The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for Antonio Conte to bring in a new forward this season. Much has made of Chelsea’s offensive struggles this term, with Alvaro Morata proving to be an inconsistent choice in the attack.
An alternative solution, then, is likely to be targeted by Chelsea this month, with a powerful, physical forward likely to be on Conte’s wishlist. If that is indeed what he is looking for, 23-year-old French forward Sébastien Haller could be just what he is looking for.
Currently playing for Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany, the Frenchman has had a sensational season in the Bundesliga. Picking up 7 goals and 2 assists in just 17 appearances ahead of his 18th game of the season (now 8 goals and 3 assists following a stellar performance against Wolfsburg), his goal involvement is better than a 2-in-1 record – which is often a benchmark for a top forward.
Whilst Alvaro Morata offers a technical, skilful option, Haller is quite the opposite. He stands at a towering 6ft2, making him a real force in the air. That’s reflected by the fact that he wins, on average (according to WhoScored.com) 5.1 aerial duels per game. That’s in stark contrast to Alvaro Morata’s 1.9 (again, via WhoScored.com) per game tally. That shows a clear distinction between the two forwards, and it suggests just what he would bring to this side. That’s not his only trait, though. He’s also a very hard worker, which Conte will love, whilst his recent scoring record proves hit potency in front of goal.
He’s also got a knack for scoring late goals, as evidenced by his last few games. He picked up a 90-minute goal against FC Heidenheim and Freiburg – ensuring that his club won three points and one point respectively. Given that he’d likely play as a backup option late in a game for Conte, that trait of scoring late goals will be key.
In truth, he ticks all the boxes for the Blues.
