The 27 year old Venezuelan-born central defender has been continuously linked with the Merseyside club over the past few years but with Roma and big spenders Zenit St. Petersburg now reportedly interested in Amorebieta, will Liverpool cough up the funds to make a worthy bid for the player?
As Amorebieta was born in the Basque area of Venezuela, he qualified for Athletic Bilbao’s eligibility standards and came up through their renowned youth system to become an important starting 11 player. After making his debut for the club in the 2005-06 La Liga season, Amorebieta has racked up over 200 games for Bilbao and would create a very noticeable gap on the team sheet if he were to be sold.
Amorebieta has been brought up playing the Bilbao style of short quick passing football that is very similar to the type of football Brendan Rodgers loves to play. Because of this, he would be able to step into the role of a ball-playing centre-back where the likes of Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel and Jamie Carragher have looked so uncomfortable this season.
For me, Amorebieta is just the sort of player Brendan Rodgers needs to keep his football philosophy and Liverpool hopes alive. One of the main things that Rodgers did so well at Swansea was to get the whole team to play the way he wanted – short quick passes and a lot of confidence in possession. At the moment, I don’t think every Liverpool player is on quite the same wavelength but Amorebieta has played a Rodgers-esque style of football his whole career and could be an important player to make Rodgers’ footballing philosophy a winning formula for the club.
However, with Zenit seemingly interested in the player and possibly looking to spend big again after splashing out on Hulk and Axel Witsel in the summer transfer window, the question remains – will Liverpool be able to make a big enough bid to tempt Amorebieta to join the Reds?
