Liverpool are continuing to track Lille central defender Aurelien Chedjou who is also being chased by Italian giants Juventus.
Both clubs were linked with the 26 year-old in October but when Chedjou was asked by French tabloid L’Equipe about the reported interest he said, “Any news about Liverpool? No. The last foreign club that contacted me was Juventus.” Chedjou turned down a move to Turin last summer in favour of staying with the French champions. Liverpool are yet to make a formal move for the Cameroon international but their interest could be stepped after he carried on by saying, “We will see what happens, but England would be an exciting destination for me.”
Chedjou joined Lille in the summer of 2007 from French minnows Rouen. Since then the defender has amassed 93 appearances for his club which in turn has helped him to break into the Cameroon national team. He was a crucial member in Lille’s Ligue 1 title winning team last season which has prompted interest from some of Europe’s top clubs. Chedjou stayed loyal to Lille in the summer by signing a new deal which expires in 2015 but a clause was included which would leave him free to discuss a move away next summer.
A bid of around £7m is reported to be enough to prise Chedjou away from the French champions which could prove to be a shrewd bit of business by Reds boss Dalglish after he received wide criticism for the large sums of money he spent on the likes of Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing.
The Reds definitely require some defensive cover – Jamie Carragher is fast approaching the end of his career, Daniel Agger’s injury concerns continue and summer signing Sebastian Coates is yet to find his feet at Anfield. Chedjou’s physical presence and ball-winning ability would bring some much needed muscle to the Liverpool back line and a style that is suited to the Premiership game.
Dalglish clearly needs to strengthen in other areas as well but the signature of the Cameroonian would give Liverpool’s defence some added depth at value for money.
