At 31-years-old, Mousa Dembele’s long-term future at Tottenham was inevitably going to become a topic of significant debate, and after a recent report from the Sun, the immediacy of Mauricio Pochettino’s issue has become abundantly clear.
According to the Sun, Dembele could move to China in January, with Chinese Super League club Beijing Guoan reportedly keen on his services. Of course, his contract expires at the end of the season, and he’s reportedly been unwilling to sign a new deal up until this point.
Given that January, then, could be Tottenham’s only chance to make some money from his sale, it would make sense for the club to cash in, but then they’ve got the problem of replacing him.
He’s going to be a very difficult player to replace for Spurs, as he often does the job of two or three different players. He’s got the tackling and work rate of a defensive midfielder, whilst he’s also got the passing range and technical quality of a number ten-style attacking midfielder.
However, it appears as though many Tottenham fans think that Pochettino’s solution could already be at the club. We recently asked fans whether young Spurs midfielder Harry Winks could be the perfect player to replace Mousa Dembele, and in response, a whopping 88% of those polled responded with a resounding yes.
Winks has been slowly introduced to the fold at Tottenham, and when he has featured, he has looked tremendous. He’s capable defensively, and like Dembele, he offers a lot of quality going forward.
He’s obviously not at the Belgian’s level yet, but at 22-years-old, he is ready for a starting berth – and if given the faith of Pochettino, he could excel.
