Tottenham Hotspur’s second striker conundrum has been a problem which Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy have collectively struggled to address in recent years, and it seems that their most recent attempt at supplying Harry Kane with a quality understudy has been a resounding failure.
The likes of Roberto Soldado, Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente have all set foot in north London with glowing reputations and failed to live up to the expectation which greeted their arrivals.
Playing the role of Kane’s understudy seems to represent something of a curse for centre-forwards and the careers of the aforementioned trio perhaps suggest that a change in strategy is required at this stage.
Considering Llorente’s lack of first-team opportunities so far this season, we asked Tottenham supporters whether they believe the Spaniard is finished at the club, and their response suggested that they have run out of patience with him.
Indeed, 88% of participants believe that Llorente is finished at Spurs just over a year after he moved to north London from Swansea City.
A return of just 5 goals from 35 appearances has certainly influenced the opinion of the supporters, and there is little evidence to suggest he will alter perceptions this season.
Llorente’s contract is due to expire in 2019 and with his 34th birthday beckoning in February 2019 it seems incredibly unlikely that he will be offered a new deal, so it’s fair to assume that the poll result will be validated by his imminent departure.
