Everton added plenty of strength to their squad in Marco Silva’s first transfer window in charge, but one of those players, Andre Gomes, may well leave the club in the summer when his season-long loan deal comes to an end.
Marcel Brands has been lauded for his excellent work in the transfer market since arriving at the club in 2018, but his decision to sign Gomes on a temporary deal may well come back to haunt him.
A permanent deal for Gomes certainly carried a strong element of risk last summer considering his limited game time at Barcelona and the fact his confidence was shattered by a mentally traumatic spell in Catalonia, so it was easy to understand why Brands opted for a loan deal.
But, after six months on Merseyside, it’s already clear that Gomes is the real deal and his performances have earned him gushing praise amongst the Toffees faithful and throughout the British media.
With his performances in mind, we asked Everton fans whether they would like to see the Portugal international (valued at £25.2 million by Transfermarkt) sign a permanent deal with the club, and the response was overwhelmingly in his favour.
Indeed, 97% of polled supporters want to see Gomes sign a long-term deal with Everton and who can blame them?
The classy midfield lynchpin has injected composure, style and creativity to the club and, barring a mini blip over the Christmas period, he has been a consistent performer alongside Idrissa Gueye.
