The Manchester City fans were delighted in the Transfer Tavern last night after they coasted past West Bromwich Ablion to restore their 15 point gap at the top of the Premier League table.
Transfer deadline day promised to be a dramatic finale to the mid-season window for Manchester City as they lined up a transfer for Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez in a club-record breaking deal, but they eventually decided to abandon their pursuit of the Algerian due to his extortionate price tag.
The reports over Mahrez slightly distracted the supporters from their signing of Aymeric Laporte who arrived on the penultimate day of the window for £57 million. However, the supporters were quick to switch their attention back to the Frenchman after he was instantly boosted to the starting eleven for his club debut last night.
Pep Guardiola’s side were in typically imperious form against The Baggies at The Etihad, and they made light work of their midweek fixture to record a 3-0 win – their 22nd league victory of the season.
Laporte slotted into City’s back-four with absolute ease and composure alongside Nicolas Otamendi, although tougher contests undoubtedly await the 23-year-old.
In the aftermath of proceedings, the City supporters took to Twitter to heap praise on their new signing and express their confidence in his ability to enjoy a bright future at the club after his extremely promising opening to life in Manchester.
Here’s what the City fans on Twitter have had to say about Laporte’s performance against West Brom last night…
City a class above again tonight, @Laporte a class act, special mention for the excellent Zinchenko , officials horrendous yet again, the players need so much more protection than they are getting before another serious injury occurs.

No outfield starter for either team tonight had a higher pass accuracy than Laporte (95%) A sound debut but he was fairly untested defensively. Promising debut!

He was awesome!

Aymeric Laporte, with those raking left footers down the inside left channel, looked like he had been spraying passes around the Etihad for years. Solid in the challenge, decent in the air. Fine debut nullifying threat from Rondon.

Thoughts on tonight
Laporte plays his first game a day after joining and looks like he has been at City for years
Otamendi is the best defender in the league
De Bruyne is the player of the season
Brahim could fill the void left by Sane
Referee was bad
Who is Alexis Sanchez?

Aymeric Laporte looks well-settled. His long balls are on the spot. Not much pressure from West Brom, but he looks very comfortable.

What a debut Aymeric Laporte had so calm and composed on the ball was constantly picking out long balls and pretty much all met another City player, won many aerial duels espiecally against Rondon an all round great performance!

Aymeric Laporte looked very comfortable last night – a few outstanding cross field passes. Positioning good. Pass completion excellent. Not the most difficult debut but hugely promising #welcomeblue

Wonderful presence on the ball and nice to have a left footer in the back 4 again.
