Aston Villa have set their sights on David Bentley to come in as positions are likely to become vacant at Villa Park as the club are preparing to lose England duo Ashley Young and Stuart Downing this summer.
Bentley has struggled through his career after emerging through the Arsenal ranks as he failed to fill his potential at the club, and after only eight appearances at senior level for the gunners with various loan spells at Norwich and Blackburn he eventually made his exit away from North London with Eawood as his new found destination.
He appeared to find his feet playing arguable the best football we have seen from the midfielder and on his debut after becoming a permanent Rovers player, he became an instant hit netting a hat trick in a 4-3 victory over Manchester United.
He went on to make 88 league appearances for Blackburn with form that earned him his first England call up, but then the curse of North London struck again. His impressive displays witnessed his former employers bitter rivals Spurs swoop the player for a whopping £16 million.
Since he signed he has seen the need for his assistance disappear and it appears Bentley was far from involved in Harry Redknapp’s plans as he stepped in to reshape the squad.
The outcast has recently spent the latter half of the previous campaign on loan at Villa’s bitter rivals, Birmingham city.
Spurs are certain to make a big loss in the transfer market where Bentley is concerned and will be lucky to receive half the money they paid for him.
With Villa manger-less it’s impossible to speculate the club’s interest, they will certainly be looking to replace players, but whether Bentley is involved in the future of the club is surely down to whoever lands the managerial role? Case continues…
