With only nine days left in the transfer window, Newcastle still need to strengthen ahead of their season opener against Tottenham Hotspur.
Rafa Benitez has been told that the club needs to sell before it can buy, as the Magpies work under a very tight budget. Aside of the defence, Ki, Kenedy and Dubravka have been brought in but if the club is going to survive this season, they still need to buy.
At the back, Mike Ashley has added Fabian Schar this summer but following Florian Lejeune’s injury, the club need to add another defender.
It may be tough to bring in another defender on a permanent deal but a loan offer for another Premier League defender. One player the club should consider bring in on a loan for the season is Manchester United defender, Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
The 20-year-old defender spent last season on loan with Crystal Palace where he managed to play 21 games in the league.
Capable of playing across the back four but also as a holding midfielder, Fosu-Mensah would be a great steal for the club. Along with his versatility, Fosu-Mensah is also incredibly quick and reasonably technical with the ball.
The only drawback to this deal, however, is that following the World Cup, Mourinho is currently without Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones, while Marcus Rojo will likely be unable to start the first game of the season after playing for Argentina.
It may be tough to get over the line but it’s a cheap deal that will please Mike Ashley while Fosu-Mensah will get some valuable playing time.
