Newcastle United have finally started to hit the ground running this season after a rather dismal start to their Premier League season.
Rafa Benitez had witnessed his side go 10 games in the top-flight before picking up their first win and have since managed to get back-to-back victories as they look to climb away from relegation once again.
The Magpies famously managed to put an impressive run of form in the second half of last season and performed a ‘great escape’ of sorts, as many had not predicted that they would be able to survive the drop.
This season had looked as though it could be heading into the same direction, however, two wins on the bounce against impressive Watford and AFC Bournemouth sides has seen Benitez’s side gain confidence, which is not too dissimilar to a match from last year’s campaign…
A moment in time: Newcastle hold West Bromwich Albion to a 2-2 draw
Although the Toon Army had managed to record four wins and two draws from their opening 10 league games last season, they had suffered a number of consecutive defeats at different stages of the first half of the season.
However, the match at The Hawthorns appeared to change things for Newcastle that year and altered the course of their campaign.
Admittedly, they did go on a run of four straight defeats after the 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion, but they did meet Chelsea and Arsenal in games away from St. James’ Park.
Following that tie with the Baggies, Benitez saw his side lose just 11 games in total, with four of those coming towards the end of the campaign when they knew they were safe, and picking up a total of eight impressive wins in that period.
Newcastle beat the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United and ensured they would be remaining in the Premier League against all the odds.
Things have started poorly for Benitez and his team this season, however, they appear to have found their rhythm recently and will be hopeful the recent international break does not ruin things.
Newcastle have a run of tough games coming up, however, now they have a belief in themselves, they could look to rise up the table once again and clear themselves further of a relegation battle.
If they were to look back on last year’s efforts for inspiration, then they should turn their attention to their 2-2 draw with West Brom as a moment to reflect on.
