Newcastle are busy tapping up Man Utd for a loan deal to bring 20-year-old Tom Cleverley to St James’ Park. The deal should be finalised when Sir Alex Ferguson returns from the club’s North American tour next month.
Chris Hughton has been an admirer of the pacy winger for some time and made enquiries last season when Cleverley was on loan at Watford. He has performed well for the Red Devils in preseason and has just penned a new three year deal but Ferguson would like him to garner some addition first team experience before letting him loose at Old Trafford.
Tom has amassed 50 senior performances and 13 goals in loan spells at Leicester and Watford during the last two seasons but what exactly can he offer the Toon Army? Well, Man. Utd obviously rate him to offer him a three year contract whilst he can provide excellent competition for Gutierrez and Routledge on either wing as the Magpies aim to steer well clear of the drop zone in their first season back in the top flight.
Newcastle’s squad is also still pretty thin on the ground as Hughton’s only other additions have been Nottingham Forest’s James Perch and free agent Dan Gosling. Cleverley’s ability to find the back of the net will be invaluable if the Magpies are to make an impression on the Premiership as will his pace and versatility. He scored 11 goals for a disappointing Hornets side last season (his tally curtailed by a knee ligament injury) whilst he can play at left back, right back and central midfield alongside his recognised position on the flanks.
Signing Tom Cleverley would be a major coup for Hughton and the England U21 international might just be what it takes for Newcastle to prolong their stay in the top flight for more than a year.
