It has not been any easier for new Saints boss Ronald Koeman who has had a tough welcome at St. Mary’s and according to the The Mirror, it is not about to get any easier for the Dutchman.
Reports suggest that the former Feyenoord boss is facing a fight to stop Jose Fonte joining the St. Mary’s cull after rejecting a bid from Championship outfit Cardiff City for the Portuguese defender.
It is believed to be the second bid made by the Bluebirds as they look to replace skipper Steven Caulker who left for Queens Park Rangers earlier this week.
The Welsh outfit have reportedly had offers of £3 million and £3.25 million for the former Crystal Palace defender rejected by the south coast club as they try to hang on to the remains of their bedraggled squad.
However it is said that Fonte is unhappy with how contract negotiations have been handled and he is yet to hold any formal talks despite his deal expiring next summer.
The defender would earn a huge pay rise by moving to Cardiff and that would rise even more if he could help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s get back in the Premier League.
Elsewhere, it looks bleak for the Saints with Dejan Lovren on the verge of joining Liverpool and Calum Chambers on the verge of joining Arsenal in multi-million pound deals.
