Indeed, it’s been an ongoing summer story and now Real ‘keeper Iker Casillas has further fuelled the fire, suggesting a £30million transfer deal could be imminent:
“From what I am hearing the signs look good,” Casillas told The Sun.
“I have only briefly spoken to people at the club but I am confident that he can be a Real Madrid player next year. I think it will be the right move for him both professionally and personally.
“A clean break from England is hopefully something he is very interested in.”
Cole, clearly, is not the most popular man in Britain. Another year passes and, as sure as night follows day, another bout of shocks and scandals diminishes his public image yet further. This year it’s been those grainy hostage-esque picture texts of his bare torso, allegedly bad-mouthing the British ahead of the World Cup, splitting from Florence Nightingale (erm, I mean Cheryl), spitting in the face of Her Majesty the Queen and defecating in a churchyard, etcetera.
Certainly, Ashley is reportedly tired of the tabloid ‘tales’ and felt insufficiently supported by Chelsea following the allegations of infidelity. A chance for a ‘Special One’ reunion in sunny Spain may well prove tempting.
Nonetheless, he is also still a very good player and one of the best left-backs in the world. Undoubtedly, his pace and guile down the left-flank proved a valuable outlet for double-winning Chelsea last year. You must also consider that, whatever the money on offer, finding an adequate replacement could prove difficult. Yuri Zhirkov could potentially fill the gap, but injury niggles have remained problematic.
Despite this, £30millon for a 29-year-old left-back is a lot of money. You wonder whether the fee would, in actuality, reach this reported figure, but even fetching somewhere in this region would be respectable. His pace is one of his sharpest assets and it is debatable how long this will last, he seems to court controversy and … it’s £30 f**kin million for a 29-year-old left-back!
The press won’t like to admit it, but they would dearly miss Mr. Cole. But, for the money supposedly on offer, would you like him to stay or go?
