The Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern have been enjoying an easy ride over the last year or so, with celebrations over their success continuing day after day. However, that all came crashing down this morning.
According to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport in Italy, the relationship between the board and manager Antonio Conte, who led the club to a Premier League title in his first season at the helm, is at breaking point after their respective positions on the future of striker Diego Costa shifted, leaving owner Roman Abramovich in a sticky patch.
The club are supposedly keen to salvage their ties with the £42.5m-rated Spanish international and want to initiate talks to that effect, whilst the former Italy boss is refusing to budge after his top scorer revealed Conte had told him via text that his time at Stamford Bridge was over.
Furthermore, the former Juventus man is growing increasingly frustrated over the lack of movement in the transfer window, with rivals Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal all having already announced deals this summer.
The consensus here in the Tavern is that Abramovich must decide as soon as possible who is more valuable to the club, player or manager, and our landlord is hedging his bets on it being the latter.
Chelsea fans, we want to hear from you! Do you think the club should just let Conte have his way and sell Costa? Let us know in the comments below…
