Abramovich ready to take control: Chelsea are reportedly set for a vital summer transfer window

It’s fair to say that the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern aren’t feeling too perky this week. The Blues suffered a defeat at the hands of arch-rivals Tottenham over the weekend, leaving a top-four finish looking increasingly unlikely.

Though they began the campaign in decent form, Chelsea’s season has been on a downward spiral since the turn of the year – and Antonio Conte’s men are only going one way.

Barring a remarkable turnaround, then, the 2017/18 season is unlikely to go down as a good one for the Blues, but if Roman Abramovich has his way about it, their poor run will end when the season does.

According to the Telegraph, Roman Abramovich is ready to get more actively involved in Chelsea’s summer activity – with the Russian prepared to have more of a hands-on approach during the off-season.

That would, you would expect, mean that he will not only be keen to aid the identification of targets, but it also implies that he may be willing to spend more freely – and that is evidently what Chelsea need right now.

They’ve fallen behind their rivals in a monetary sense over the last couple of years, and their form on the pitch has suffered as a result.

Who the manager will be come the start of next season remains to be seen, but it appears as though they will be managing a very different team to the one that turned out against Spurs on Sunday.

Landlord’s Verdict

Abramovich has taken a back seat in recent years, and that’s been problematic for Chelsea.

The more involved he can get the better, but he also needs to consider the manager’s stance – as Antonio Conte has clearly not been adequately backed over the last year.

Whatever the case, big changes are needed at Chelsea this summer.
