Abramovich’s latest reported decision could be his smartest Chelsea move in years – agreed?

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are loving reports suggesting that Roman Abramovich is willing to keep Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

The Italian has been widely expected to quit London this summer, with things far from perfect at Stamford Bridge, but the Sun is reporting that Abramovich is keen to keep him at the club, provided that Conte’s stops publicly voicing his frustration at the Blues’ transfer policy.

Of course, this is far from confirmation that he is set to stay, but our landlord thinks that if Abramovich does decide to hang on to Conte – it could be his smartest decision in a very long time.

After all, Chelsea’s season has been far from a disaster. They’re still within touching distance of the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Man Utd, and they’re still in contention against Barcelona in the Champions League. Sure, they haven’t competed for the Premier League trophy this year  – but the nature of their title victory last season is something to be celebrated, not to be compared with.

For too long, Chelsea have been hampered by Abramovich’s trigger-happy approach to management. In the past, managers have come and gone, and often that has led to short-term success for Chelsea – but now they need long-term success. The Blues always play with fire, and sooner or later, they are going to get burnt. That’s already happened, in a sense, with former managers like Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti going on to achieve massive success following their reigns in London. You can bet that Conte will have a similar level of success were he to quit the club, too.

Short-term planning has its perks, but now is the perfect time for Chelsea to think long-term. It will allow further focus on young players, who have often been neglected in favour of short-term fixes, and it will also give Chelsea the stability that they so desperately need, because they can’t keep changing their manager and changing their philosophy just to achieve immediate success.

Sure, Chelsea could sack Conte, and that might lead to renewed success next term, but what will happen the year after? No doubt, if history is anything to go by, it will end in tears. Instead, they need to ride this wave for a while and hope that success follows – and if Abramovich does that, as he is reported to be willing to do – he could reap the rewards by overseeing the rise of a real dynasty at Stamford Bridge.
